Service to Country- Veteran's Day

We are a family that while fairly new to the country has given her service. During WWII, the grandparents that immigrated here from Ukraine had 3 sons fight, and later the youngest son served. My father's stepdad--my grandfather-- served in the Army. He was drafted at the age of 38 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and liberated a camp. My dad joined the Navy in 1947 and retired when I was in high school. My mom worked in the Navy Department in D.C. and quit when she had me. However, mom was "mom and dad" for many years while dad was away. I joined the Navy in 1973 and served 8 years. It was not the time of "equal opportunity" yet..couldn't go to the academy nor serve aboard ship. However I did become a Navy Weather Forecaster...at the time there was only 12 of us "female types" out of 250 forecasters. I was the only one serving on the East Coast (Washington D.C.). My brother served in the Army and later the Navy, for a total of 6 years.

My heart goes out to those serving today and their families. Not only for the time spent away, but for those who do not return the same person they were when they left. May God be with all of those in harm's way.
