Getaway to the Shenandoah

We traveled to New Market, Virginia today. At one point we can hit 4 states in about 45 minutes...Pennsylvania, Maryland (my birth state), West Virginia, Virginia. I lived in Virginia until I was 11, so I always love crossing over. We traveled to meet a cyberfriend for a weekend. We are all American Civil War historians. New Market is the site of a great battle that involved Confederate and the young students of VMI (Virginia Military Institute) and Union Troops. The 54th PA fought there, and those men were from my home town and county.

Our first visit was to Stonewall Jackson's Winchester Headquarters (the house belonged to the grandfather of actress Mary Tyler Moore). They have the best collection of his belongings. Jackson is one of my favorite characters of ACW. Also in Winchester is the Headquarters of George Washington at the advent of the French and Indian Wars. After that we went to the Confederate Cemetery. (the Union Cemetery was closing) These are the family members of the family that later produced George Patton of WWII.
