Today is Orthodox Christmas. My mother's family use to celebrate on January 7th- they were Ukrainian Catholic which followed the Greek or Byzantine Rite. My grandfather always observed today. We used to call it Russian Christmas, but he would get mad and say "I not Russian! I Ukrainian!". My husband used to observe this day too, but they changed to the 25th when he was boy.
We do have school districts here that are closed today in observance, and the local radio stations will play Christmas music all day. In some ways it is nice, as it is the Celebration of the Birth of Christ that is the center and all the hoopla that we 25th-ers stick on just isn't there.
So to all who celebrate Christmas today....
