When we built our house, we wanted more than just a front door. I wanted to be able to get as much light in in the winter ( the front of our home faces due west) and add fresh air whenever possible. So these tall vertical windows are called sidelights. Ours open up and they swing out. The icy latch is on the inside. Two weeks ago when we were skipping around singing "trala trala" because it was so unseasonably warm, I had them open for that glorious fresh air. For those in the warm clims....the frontdoor is metal and is insulated. On the outside is with a full glass storm door, that we replace with a screen door in the summer. This is storm side of our house.
