In August we start to whimper when we see the signs that the season is changing....
Here on the mountain our leaves will be gone in about 6 weeks...and we will have to wait until April to see them again. We only have about 5 months of full leaf. Our fall color peaks around October 10th. We usually get a good rain or wind storm (usually a hurricane remnant) and that take the leaves down.
We haven't had any rain to speak of in 2 months, so that is stressing our trees and there is fall color everywhere.
But the signs are everywhere.... the songbirds are gone. The sun comes up now and there is no calliope of noise that the birds would sing in greeting the new day. Our year round birds are currently living around the Angel Fountain.
The Golden Rod is blooming...the last of perennial "weeds". I used the word weed loosely, as we have it planted in our flower beds, along with Queen Anne's Lace. The saying goes the only difference between a weed and a perennial is the price you pay!
And our Maiden Hair Grass has sent up it's plumes. Last weekend we had none, this week...well it's a pretty big sign....
And the last REALLY BIG SIGN...the newpaper listed all of the Festival's that start this weekend and go through October 11th.
