This is from a tower we climbed to get an overview of Oak Ridge on the battle field.
This extremely tall tower in on the Confederate Line. I have climbed it...as a note I have fear of heights...and getting up on this thing takes a good deal of intestinal fortitude on my part. The Girl Child ran up to about half way...and changed her mind about going to the top. HALF WAY.... So I had to come back down...all that for nothing. But believe me the view is what makes me get up there.
There were a group of "Confederates" camped on the Confederate line. This group of re-enactors did a firing demonstration. What caught my eye was the little boy..the flag bearer. It is hard to believe that kids this age served during the Civil War.
Then we drove over to the Pennsylvania Monument. Here there was a Union encampment. They were demonstrating artillery fire. They fired the cannon off twice. As loud and smokey as it was, one has to realize that they are firing with a third of the powder..not a full charge. Then I try to think on hundreds of cannon all going off and the smoke and smell. One just cannot wrap their head around it and what took place.
I am always reading something on Gettysburg, so going as often as we do I always find something interesting to investigate. PLUS they have the nicest shops and some of the neatest art stores....if you like prints on the Civil War. The only thing I don't care for is the place is so jammed pack with people it is hard to get around... So we rather go in the "off season". But it does my history heart good to see so many people taking the time to visit this place.
Afterwards we headed home and took a side trip to an orchard. What a lovely spot...all types of fruit trees, and a pond with a geese family. We came home with August apples-- do I smell an Apple Crisp???? And we also got a half bushel of peaches...so this week will be "The Making Of The Jam" week
