The two center beds are beans. This summer we will not have any beans to speak of. The first planting was all chomped up by slugs. The second planting we have had a critter of different kind. The construction back behind us, which initiated the Squirrel War ( by the way, one gray and one red are back!) has also flushed out the deer. This is the first time in our 16 summers here that deer have gotten into the garden. They have chomped on the beans and pretty much decimated them and the lettuce. The little indentations are deer hoof marks. The bright green is all that is left of the lettuce. Since we have never had a deer problem, our fence is only high enough to keep out bunnies.
On the bright side the zucchini and squash have finally bloomed, and by Wednesday we should have one of each. By next week we will probably have 20 of each!!!!
The cool summer and wet weather have slowed down the tomatoes. We are just finally getting some!!! We should be up to our necks in them by Labor Day. In the meantime I have contented myself by buying a bag full in Virginia and enjoying them.
The Black Eye Susans are out and mixed in with Queens Anne Lace. Two of my summer favorites.
