The Jackson Whirlwind Tour

This morning we headed to New Market VA to visit with our Alabama Friend and stay at our favorite B&B.

After we got to New Market, we decided to go to Fredericksburg and take in all of the Stonewall Jackson sites.

The first leg of the trip took us over the Massanutten Mountain through Luray, then we crossed over the Skyline Drive. That is quite a ride, but lovely. Virginia has made those particular mountain roads nice to drive.

We came down through Culpeper and entered Fredericksburg along RT3. (This is were "they" are planning on building a big Walmart on the edge of the Wilderness Battlefield. I could easily rant about that, but will hold my typing fingers at this point......) Our first stop was the site of the start Jackson's famous flank attack at Chancellorsville. It is one of those places that you have to know right where to look to find it.

We then buzzed through Fredericksburg and arrived at the "Jackson Shrine" ( one can see the signs off of 1-95). We take the old roads to get there, as you can follow the Civil War Trail markers. They were just getting ready to close, but the two rangers let us stay. This is the site where Jackson died. At one time there was a main house, this is the overseers office.

This is the room that Jackson died in. The bed and clock are original.

We then went back into town and stopped at the Sunken Wall. This view is looking up towards Marye's Heights. This fellow was enjoying the warmth and sun on the wall.....

I was happy as the Virginia Crepe Myrtles were blooming. I just so love those trees. In the baking heat of a Virginia summer these lovelies just thrive!!!

Our last stop was at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center. Here is the location where Jackson was wounded. "The Spot" is not where the monument is but off into the woods.

We headed back, stopped in Culpeper for dinner. The Good Husband drove us back over the mountains, and it was almost 11pm by the time we got back to the B&B in New Market!

As I said it was the Jackson Whirlwind Tour!
