Scenic Drive-- con't

This was the roadside stop for Camp Allegheny. This stop is right on the VA/WVA line, the second sign is about WVA. I had to scrape all of the snow and ice off the Civil War Trails sign, and yes I had boots on so the snow doesn't slow me down. The Confederates camped here in December of 1861, so we could get a sense of what life was like. Except they didn't have the warm clothes that we had, or heated cars.

This is what greeted us as we dropped off the mountain, looking east. It was such a pretty scene.

Another squall was coming. This was at the base of the ridge on the far side of the above photo. The squall coming in was to the south/ southwest. We high tailed it as we wanted to get over that ridge before the squall hit.

This is the Confederate Highlander monument in McDowell, VA. He is looking up to the mountain. The snow arrived about the same time we did.
The town looked so pretty with the snow flying and all decked out for Christmas. In 1862 the Confederates and Union forces fought down here.

Scenic drive

We wanted to travel along Route 250 out of Staunton, VA and into West Virginia. The road was initially built while the two states were still one. All along Rt.250 are numerous Civil War sites, as the area was fought over to determine what the western counties would do. (They went to the Union and became West Virginia in 1863). At the top of one of the mountains (at 4,000 feet) is the remains of a Confederate camp...Camp Allegheny. Going there was the purpose of our trip. But I had to scrape the snow and ice off the roadside signs to read about it, and then we looked up the road to the camp. Still had 2 miles to go, on an unbroken trail. We decided to save it for a summer's day!!! It is also hunting season. Signs advised us to wear orange, and we didn't have any. We chose not to be mistaken for someone's dinner......

Camp Allegheny would have been atop one of these mountains.

These are views from Rt. 33 in West Virginia looking down into the valley. The mountains are unbelievably beautiful. This photograph shows snow showers in progress.

A room with a view....

The view from our bedroom window. This is the mountain that I love to watch during all the seasons. When I can't see it, it is foggy or snowing.




I walked down to the end of my street where there is a field. And this is the view of the mountain from there. Sometimes we will see a herd of deer there.
